LaCoax does an excellent job of communicating his message through the lives of his characters in an exhilarating way. Cellar Doors is a book that will be hard to put down. The purpose of this review will be to explain some of the ideas behind Cellar Doors, and to let readers know that this book is a must-have in any library.
Brief Summary of the Book

One of the most notable features in the book is the theme of spiritual warfare. This book will leave readers with a greater understanding of the real spiritual war that is raging throughout everyday lives. LaCoax communicates the reality of spiritual warfare by intricately weaving together the lives of several rounded characters, on par with the characters drawn by authors like Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker.
LaCoax draws his readers into the reality of spiritual warfare through vivid imagery and potent symbolism. In addition to his imagery and symbolism, he does an incredible job of creating scenes. The scenes are separated by the chapters; each chapter is a new scene (which often makes for short chapters). Each of these chapters develops a rich new environment which allows the reader to feel as if he is actually there.
In each new scene, the feelings of the characters involved are clearly communicated. Readers can feel the oppression, the emptiness, and the fear in the characters; and later the freedom, joy, and peace of those who survived the raging battle. Readers will empathize with many of the characters.
Critical Interaction with the Book

In addition to the theme of spiritual warfare, LaCoax also does an excellent job of communicating the following: the power that Christians have over evil principalities, the power of the name of Jesus, and the necessity of trusting Jesus at all times. LaCoax's theology on spiritual warfare is solid. The message of the power of Christians over evil (through Jesus, of course) is comforting and encouraging, leaving readers feeling more confident in their strength found in God.
In addition to the power Christians have over the forces of evil, LaCoax makes his readers aware of the power of the name of Jesus. In a scene where one of the major characters, Beth, has to fight a violent demon that has entered her house, she calls upon the name of Jesus which causes the demon to freeze in fear and subsequently flee from her home.
Additionally, the comparison between Beth and another major character, Kat, communicates the difference between the oppression suffered by those without Jesus, and the freedom celebrated by those who have Jesus. Beth, a saved Christian, hears the voice of God telling her to trust in Him. Kat on the other hand, lost in the guilt of the evil she has committed, hears voices reminding her of evil she has done which later tell her to cut and kill herself. This provides an excellent comparision/contrast between the lives of someone who has been saved and someone who has not been saved.
Later, about the question of being saved, one character asks another from what he has been saved. His repsonse of, "Myself," provides an excellent answer to the question which the book poses, "Why do I need to be saved?" The characters in the book are plagued with the evil they have committed (and some of the things they have done are shocking and appalling), yet they can be free from the evil of their past.
Conclusion

The overall message of the book and the exciting plot make this book a must-have in any library. The incredible themes of spiritual warfare and freedom from oppression make this book invaluable to all people: Christian and non-Christian. Excellent writing style and a wonderful message make this book impossible to pass up, especially at such an inexpensive price!

This is a great story. Edge of your seat action. Lots of intrigue and mystery. My only criticisms are that, even though there is a sequel, and some loose ends will most likely be explained in this, I feel it could have been explained in this volume rather than have to wait for the sequel. This lessens the enjoyment of this first instalment. One loose end is what promise did Gwen show to the Higher Echelon that they needed to seek after her? Also what is the involvement with Aunt Gerri apart from being part of this Higher Echelon Hierarchy? How did Ted obtain the necklace in the beginning of the novel?
I would have liked an explanation of the power of Christ's victory over sin and death to explain why Jude was able to "conquer" the demons. This was not explained in this novel. Gwen asked him how this was possible and no explanation was given. The same involving Mag. She was delivered from her demonic possession/oppression but no explanation is given to how, just that she had a "Jesus moment". I found this disappointing and definitely a watering down of the power of the Cross over sin and death and that we as Christians have this power over demonic possession if He lives in us.
If the effects and nature of demonic possession/oppression can be included in a Christian novel of this high calibre, to add to the suspense and plot development, then why cannot the same be done for how to deal with this demonic activity by including how the power of the Cross is victorious over demons and their activity?
Nonetheless, this is a great story, has the elements of true demonic oppression and possession and occult practices. The author has developed the characters well and the plot flows well and you are not given a rest at any stage. I love that. He has also included elements where you start to guess who is who for example, who is the insider who kidnaps Gwen (seeing she recognises him) and who the real identity of Judas? Are they the same person or two? This is done very well. The developing relationship between Gwen and Jude and Eric and Mag is also a great balance to the plot and to balance out the tension and suspense.
All in all this is a great debut novel. I look forward immensely to the next instalment. This author just better not take too long in completing it and releasing it!!

I have not read a book like this in a long time. Actually I have read a fiction book in general in a very long time. I just stay too busy and read mostly informational books these days. But this one drew me in. I read it in 2 sittings. I only stopped because I have a family to care for, or it would have all been read at once. I NEEDED to read this book.
How about a good book for summer reading? The kind that keeps you on the edge of your seat? The kind that you can't put down? The kinda that you get sunburned while reading it because you can't move? And when you finally do move it is only to go sit on the front porch and continue reading? Want one of THOSE books? How about if it actually can open your eyes and transform your life? How about if it reminds you you aren't crazy? How about if it revives your prayer life because it gives you a glimpse of the reality all around you that most folks are ignoring? How about if it gives you hope?
Just like there is a moving current under seemingly still water, there is also a very, very, deadly serious spirit world. And it is anything but still. Cellar Doors gives us a glimpse into that world without glorifying the dark side. It is real, very real, and we need to see it. This book is a novel, a fictional novel, yet it is all too real. Trust me, a very real God will speak to you through this if you are willing to hear. This book is for the saved, the unsaved and the ones who can't quite figure out where they stand. It is not for the faint of heart.
