Scottish international singer, song writer and writer of early 20th c. Harry Lauder travels to the WWI battlefields in NW France to entertain and raise the morale of British and allied troops after his only child, a son, makes the ultimate sacrifice fighting in France. Lauder is filled with grief. Too old at 46 to fight, he makes his contribution by entertaining the troops. Seeing this first modern war's devastation and carnage through his words and eyes of a noncombatant makes this book unusual. When Harry is taken to his son's grave site, tears fill your eyes. The book was written not only related to his tour but to raise the morale of the folks back home and those like himself who are grief stricken. A few photos included but no maps.
Before reading this book, my only knowledge of Lauder was a shrub-like tree called Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, Corylus avellanas 'Contorta'. Recommendation buy only the plant that is grown on its own roots.
We see a more serious side to Harry Lauder as he deals with the death of his son. His insights into the front lines of WWI are among the best I have read.
I enjoy reading first hand accounts of WWI and this one was worth the read. It is a personalized account of the war that demonstrated that this war was fought by real people and is not just a couple of paragraphs in a dusty history book.
